A Blinkered Approach

چکیده

This paper will consider the ways in which children take part in two distinct branches of horse sport, equestrianism and horseracing, focusing on their historical separateness and their more recent rapprochement through the development of pony racing. Using material from a recent study of children and horseracing, it will demonstrate that most racecourses still see youngsters as passive consumers rather than active participants while preliminary research into the specifically child-centred equestrian organisation, the British Pony Club, suggests a participant culture and an institution prepared to countenance change.

Learning to select computations

Efficient use of limited computational resources is essential to intelligence. Selecting computations optimally according to rational metareasoning would achieve this, but rational metareasoning is computationally intractable. Inspired by psychology and neuroscience, we propose the first learning algorithm for approximating the optimal selection of computations. We derive a general, sample-effi...

1 Can the monograph help solve the library ’ serials ’ funding crisis ?

This article will argue that the limiting the hunt for solutions to the library funding crisis to the serials sector is blinkered and hinders the development of integrated e-information systems. It will demonstrate that significant savings are to be had if ICT technologies are used to publish monographs online as serials. By ignoring this possibility the publishing industry delays the advent of...

Semi-Myopic Sensing Plans for Value Optimization

We consider the following sequential decision problem. Given a set of items of unknown utility, we need to select one of as high a utility as possible (“the selection problem”). Measurements (possibly noisy) of item values prior to selection are allowed, at a known cost. The goal is to optimize the overall sequential decision process of measurements and selection. Value of information (VOI) is ...

We Know the Yin—But Where Is the Yang? Toward a Balanced Approach on Common Source Bias in Public Administration Scholarship

Surveys have long been a dominant instrument for data collection in public administration. However, it has become widely accepted in the last decade that the usage of a self-reported instrument to measure both the independent and dependent variables results in common source bias (CSB). In turn, CSB is argued to inflate correlations between variables, resulting in biased findings. Subsequently, ...

Molecular Biology of the Cell

cellular viewpoint. That is all very well. In any case academics will swallow almost anything if it's their job. Even if the botanists of the 18th century, the well-intentioned of the 19th century and the latterday enthusiasts of this century believed in the cell, is it an approach that is truly relevant? Such must surely be the attitude of today's sceptical medical students, and of many of the...
